FOUNDING A SCHOOL
One Step at a Time
Shade Canyon is working to bring tuition-free, Waldorf-inspired education to Lake County in the form of a public charter school. If all goes as planned and with enough grassroots support, we will open our doors in the Fall of 2022.
We believe this enriching approach to education should be an option for all who desire it. We are working with local and state educators and officials to gain charter status and build this independently-operated public school.
Our passion and dedication to bring this enlivening model of education to our community drives our daily rhythms and continues to open up new horizons.
It is a long and mighty road, and we are deeply thankful that our paths have crossed. Please see below to learn more about where we are in the process of building Shade Canyon School and stay tuned for updates!
WHAT WE'RE UP TO
We believe Lake County is ready for Shade Canyon, a tuition-free, Waldorf-inspired public charter school, and we’re doing all we can to bring it into being.
A charter school is a tuition-free public school of choice that has the freedom to create its own curriculum to meet the needs of the students it serves. To become a charter school, founders must receive authorization from a local school board by submitting a lengthy petition.
We are currently in the petition-writing phase of Step One, which includes researching facilities, developing curriculum, setting up the school’s structure, and demonstrating why Shade Canyon is a beneficial addition to the Kelseyville Unified School District.
STEP ONE
Assemble a Founding Team
Develop School Philosophy, Vision, Mission, and Name
Build Community
Participate in California Charter School Association’s New School Growth Program
Write Petition
Raise Funds for Tax, Accounting and Legal Assistance throughout School Formation
Gather Signatures for Petition
STEP TWO
Submit Petition to Kelseyville Unified School District, Spring of 2021
Wait for Authorization from the KVUSD School Board
Celebrate Authorization!
STEP THREE
Establish Any Outside Funding Options
Hire Teachers and Staff
Enroll Students
Prepare Facilities, Finalize Operational Plan, Meet Compliance Requirements
Welcome Families to the First Day of School at Shade Canyon, Fall of 2022
