Lantern Making Shade Canyon Playgroup

This week’s playgroup will be a special one, the first in a two-part series as we prepare for our own playgroup Lantern Walk. Each year, Waldorf-inspired schools hold a Lantern Festival on an evening in early November. Families and students walk together through the dark, carrying lanterns and singing. 

We’ll hold our own modified version of a Lantern Festival at our normal playgroup time on November 18, in the “dark” of the Peace & Plenty Farm barn.

Join us this Friday, October 4, at Peace & Plenty Farm at 4550 Soda Bay Road in Kelseyville, from 10-11:30 a.m., to help your child make their own lantern and learn traditional Lantern Walk songs. If able, PLEASE BRING a small canning jar or something like it that your child can glue tissue paper onto (4-oz., 8-oz., or 16-oz. jars all work). We will also have some jars to give those who are unable to bring one of their own. Please dress so that you'll be comfortable outdoors for an hour and a half.

During this time of year, as the days shorten and dark nights lengthen, the Lantern Walk reminds us that we each have a light inside we carry with us, no matter how dark it gets. Like other Waldorf festivals, this is a time of beauty and joy. We look forward to all the wonderful festivals we will share through the years once Shade Canyon School opens in September in 2023.
